FASHION, NOVELTY AND OPTIMALITY: An application from Physics

چکیده
We apply a physical based model to describe the clothes fashion market. Every time a new outlet appears on the market, it can invade the market under certain specific conditions. Hence, the “old” outlet can be completely dominated and disappears. Each creator competes for a finite population of agents. Fashion phenomena are shown to result from a collective phenomenon produced by local individual imitation effects. We assume that, in each step of the imitation process, agents only interact with a subset rather than with the whole set of agents. People are actually more likely to influence (and be influenced by) their close “neighbours”. Accordingly we discuss which strategy is best fitted for new producers when people are either simply organised into anonymous reference groups or when they are organised in social groups hierarchically ordered. While counterfeits are shown to reinforce the first strategy, creating social leaders can permit to avoid

Local Optimality Certificates for LP Decoding of Tanner Codes
We present a new combinatorial characterization for local optimality of a codeword in an irregular Tanner code. The main novelty in this characterization is that it is based on a linear combination of subtrees in the computation trees. These subtrees may have any degree in the local code nodes and may have any height (even greater than the girth). We expect this new characterization to lead to ...
متن کاملSharp interface control in a Penrose–Fife model
In this paper we study a singular control problem for a system of PDEs describing a phasefield model of Penrose-Fife type. The main novelty of this contribution consists in the idea of forcing a sharp interface separation between the states of the system by using heat sources distributed in the domain and at the boundary. We approximate the singular cost functional with a regular one, which is ...
متن کاملOptimal Distributed Control Problem for the b-Equation
This paper is concerned with the optimal distributed control problem governed by b-equation. We firstly investigate the existence and uniqueness of weak solution for the controlled system with appropriate initial value and boundary condition. By contrasting with our previous result, the proof without considering viscous coefficient is a big improvement. Secondly, based on the well-posedness res...
متن کاملInverting Dynamic Programming (meta 2012)
We suggest and discuss a formalization of Dynamic Programming. A methodological novelty consists in an explicit treatment (interpretation) of ascending Dynamic Programming as least fix-point computation (according to Knaster-Tarski fix-point theorem). This interpretation leads to a uniform approach to classical optimization problems as well as to problems where optimality is not explicit (Cocke...
متن کاملOptimal control of age-structured systems with mixed state-control constraints
The paper deals with a general optimal control problem for age-structured systems. A necessary optimality condition of Pontryagin type is obtained, where the novelty is in that mixed control-state constraints are present. The proof uses an abstract Lagrange multiplier theorem, and the main difficulty is to obtain regularity of the Lagrange multipliers in the particular problem at hand.
